This is my own rendition of Superman as he appeared during the Golden Age of comics (World War II era). Inset in the background is a watermark of ACTION COMICS #1, the first comic book in which the Man of Steel ever appeared.

Very good picture of Superman. It captures the modern Superman in an interesting and perfect light.

I say 'modern Superman' because this isn't like Golden-Age WWII Superman. HIS outfit kinda looked like this: [link] which is also a marked departure from Superman of Action Comics #1. In AC#1, the cover and the actual comic had slightly different outfits: In the actual comic, he didn't have red boots, and the shield was perfectly triangular and completely yellow. Also, AC#1 Supes had a tendency to smirk, whereas WWII Supes was grim (as he should be, because fighting Nazis is serious business).

This Superman of yours bears a much greater resemblance to modern-day Supes as opposed to any Golden-Age Superman. It looks excellent, and captures much of his character, but the title is a wee bit misleading.

Hey, wouldn't it be great if they made a Superman movie which was set in 1938? Y'know, so we could actually SEE Superman fighting the Nazis, and all that? I dunno, I think that'd be pretty epic!

Yes, yes it would be. I'm kinda confused as to WHY they haven't done that yet. Superman is very much a child of the 1930s, so why you can't just make a movie set in that time period is beyond me. It's fairly obvious you don't need to set action movies in modern-day times, so why not have Superman fighting Nazis (the only historical enemy EVERYBODY hates) in a time period where his trunks actually make sense (I suppose they make sense in the 1980s as well, but... the 80s had really bad taste in clothing).

I know, right? That would be so cool… oh, why are the movie producers so clueless? :/

Because the words "Gritty reboot" sound more interesting (although when you think about it, WWII would be a pretty damn excellent time to HAVE a gritty reboot of Superman, as the time was fraught with civil injustice in Europe, the U.S., and Japanese-held territory).
